It grows wild in the southern United States as well as in tropical areas of South America and Africa. According to historical research, ancient peoples of Mexico and South America used the sticky liquid of the morning glory vines as a crucial ingredient in the production of latex. In warm climates, seed can be direct sown in spring as soon as the soil reaches a temperature of 70-85 degrees F. For faster germination, nick the seed coat with a sharp knife or soak the seed in warm water overnight. In cooler climates, the seed can be started indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost of spring; plant the nicked seeds 1/4" deep and keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy until germination, which should take place in 7-10 days with adequate warmth. Transplant seedlings outdoors as soon as the soil has warmed to at least 70 degrees F and there is no chance of frost.
