Abbott & Costello Old Time Radio Shows Abbott and Costello were an American comedy duo whose work in radio, film, and television made them one of the most popular and respected comedy teams in history. Their "Who's on First?" routine, developed during their years in burlesque, is widely considered to be one of the greatest comedy sketches of all time! The two comedians first worked together in 1935 at the Eltinge Burlesque Theater on 42nd Street in New York . Costello became a burlesque comic in 1928 after failing as a movie stunt double and extra; Abbott had been in burlesque since 1916, as a cashier and producer. Lou tells the story: “I typically worked with a straight man - someone who would set up the jokes, and work to rein in the comedian when he was going too far, or starting to lose the audience. One night in 1931 my regular straight man got sick, so I asked the theater manager, who also worked as a straight man, to fill in.” Bud Abbott agreed, creating the birth of one of the greatest comedy teams of all time . They made their partnership formal in 1936, building an act by adapting and improving numerous old burlesque sketches into their own style. Abbott was the arch, often scheming straight man and Costello the confused, context-challenged naïf. They received their first national exposure in 1938 when they appeared on radio's The Kate Smith Hour . Their popularity on the program grew and they stayed on as regulars for two years. This led to roles in a Broadway musical, "The Streets of Paris," in 1939 and some 38 motion pictures. Beginning as a replacement series for the Fred Allen Show on NBC, the comedic duo later launched their own show in October, 1942 on NBC. The show was sponsored by Camel Cigarettes for five years before moving to ABC from 1947-49 and then to television in 1951. This show has all the classic bumblings typical of Bud and Lou including the infamous “Who’s on First.” # # # * * SAVE EVEN MORE!! * * This show now comes bundled as part of our Complete Comedy Collection which includes scores of similarly themed Old Time Radio Shows for one low price! 115 Episodes in MP3 format ship on a single CD with paperless labeling 100% Guaranteed to play on your CD-enabled PC or your money back Over 55 hours of play Listen while you commute!
