Dick Tracy Old Time Radio Shows As were so many radio shows of their day, D ick Tracy was originally torn from the pages of comic books authored by Chester Gould. Gould was the first to introduce raw violence to comic strips, reflecting the hostile streets of 1930’s Chicago . Gould also did his best to keep up with the latest in crime fighting techniques and, though Tracy often ended a case in a shootout, he used forensic science, futuristic gadgetry, and plain hard thinking to track the bad guys down. In 1934 D ick Tracy moved to radio, when Mutual produced the show for the New England region. Ned Wever, later to be known as the voice of Jor-El in the Superman radio series, played Tracy, making him the first actor to portray the character. In 1937 NBC took the show, and ran it for two years. It restarted on the NBC Blue Network in 1943, and ran until 1948. Initially, the radio show ignored Tracy's detective background, and made him first an aviator (pre-US entry to WW II), then (unsurprisingly) a war hero. After the war, they finally turned Tracy into the cop he had always been everywhere else.
