Description

Jean Shepherd Collection Old Time Radio Shows Jean Shepherd was a writer, humorist, satirist, actor, radio TV and film personality and an all-around American original. He was a master story teller in the league of Mark Twain, S.J. Perlman and P.G. Wodehouse. Taking bits and pieces from his own life, he weaved tales of the joys, humor, and intrigue of life in America . Shepherd began his broadcast radio career on WSAI AM in Cincinnati , Ohio in 1948 after the war. He later had a television program in Cincinnati called Rear Bumper. In 1957, he was recommended as the replacement for the resigning Steve Allen on NBC's The Tonight Show. NBC executives even sent Shepherd to New York City to prepare for the position, but later abandoned the offer due to some previous contractual obligations. So "Shep", as he was known, settled in at WOR-AM radio New York City, in an overnight time slot, where he delighted his fans by telling stories, reading poetry (especially the works of Robert W. Service), and organizing comedic listener stunts. His most famous of these involved the urging of his “Night People” followers to go into book stores all over the city asking for the book I, Libertine . The book ultimately made it to the New York Times Best Sellers list long before it was ever printed! Another prank depleted many East Coast inventories of Lifebuoy soap. Listeners of all backgrounds related intimately to Shepherd. One faithful listener later wrote of him, “Here (at WOR), he spent the next 22 years talking to "me". Every Jean Shepherd listener will tell you that, as he sat there in front of the radio, or had it tucked beneath his pillow, Shep was talking only to "me". He had a method of talking as if he were sitting in your living room holding a casual conversation, discussing auto racing, or a recent trip abroad.” Throughout his career, he performed entirely without scripts. On most fourth of Julys, however, he would read one of his most enduring and popular short stories, "Ludlow Kissel and the Dago Bomb that Struck Back." In the 1960s and 1970s, his WOR show ran from 9:15 to 10PM , so his "Ludlow Kissel" reading was coincidentally timed to many New Jersey and New York local town fireworks displays, which would traditionally reach their climax at 10PM . It was possible, on one of those July 4th nights, to park one's car on a hilltop and watch several different pyrotechnic displays, accompanied by Shepherds's masterful story-telling. Many of his narratives were accompanied by novelty songs such as "The Bear Missed the Train" (a parody of the Yiddish ballad "Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen") and "The Sheik of Araby", or by Shepherd himself playing the harmonica and kazoo. His oral narrative style was a precursor to that used by Spalding Gray and Garrison Keillor. Shepherd passed away in 1999. Throughout his lifetime, he achieved a level of success which many have compared to that of Mark Twain. The books, the movies, and over 5,000 hours of radio in New York alone is an achievement that is not realized in a lifetime by many people, and Shep did it all without missing a stride. Memories of his timeless work linger with those who knew him, like the childhood stories he loved to tell. And even today, as you listen to one of his old shows from the sixties, it will be as if he’d never left.
